Becoming Holy

Oh, what a beautiful morning!

on January 29, 2013

051God’s graces are shining this morning.  Today began with a wonderful walk with a friend.  Grace-filled moments of sharing words, sharing experiences, and breathing in the glory of God’s creation.  A gentle reminder of all I have to be thankful for!  The title of this post is to honor my sweet mom.  I remember her singing the words from “Oklahoma!” around the house in the early morning, “Oh, what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day. Oh what a beautiful feeling, everything’s going my way.”  She would call upstairs to wake us up, “Good morning, girls!”  She fairly sang that as well!  How could one wake up grumpy with a mom waking you up like that?!  I’m pretty sure I still managed a little morning irritability, but I loved and still love my mom’s continuous efforts to bring joy to her children!

It is my turn now. I hear my mom’s voice when I sing from that same musical.  I copy her intonation and cadence as I sing “Good morning!” to my children.  I love that I get to be mom to my kids.  It is amazing what we pass down to our children.  Both good and bad.  I pray each day that the good in me become stronger and that the bad become less.  I ponder the words of St. Paul when he says in Romans 7:15, “For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate.”  If St. Paul struggled, we must expect to struggle as well.  The important thing is to continue to struggle, to continue to work at the good we want to do.

This is the journey to holiness I desire~to dive into the Scriptures and learn from God, Himself, what He asks of me.  As Matthew Kelly often says, “We cannot become more like Jesus Christ and stay exactly as we are.”  Our lives should be in a constant state of change and my goal must be to become more and more like Jesus Christ.  I look at my mom, a busy farm wife with ten children, finding time to sing joyful songs, to wake her children with love, to work daily at becoming more and more like Jesus Christ~and I cannot help but sing, “Oh what a beautiful morning!”
